Stump grinding is priced mainly by the stump's diameter — measured across the widest point at ground level — and by how hard it is to reach. A single stump in an open lawn is straightforward; several stumps, or one wedged against a fence, wall, or rock, take more setup. Hardwood stumps and big surface-root systems grind slower than soft, rotting wood.
